A Fluffy Edge for Winter

It's a brisk cool winter here in Brisbane, Australia, so I just popped a snowy white fluffy edge on my simple fingerless gloves! Just for fun mind you, aren't they nice? Its just a round of sc, and I wove in the ends with the crochet hook instead of with sewing it in with a yarn needle as the yarn is a bit thick for that. The yarn is Moda Vera Rossellini 50% wool 50% nylon that I found at the RSPCA second hand store some years ago, which I save for special projects like this!

Monster Claw Gloves

I made these fingerless gloves for my 4 year old son last week, in case he needed to wear them when we went to Stanthorpe. It wasn't as cold as I thought it would be though so he didn't wear them when we were there, but he did really like them! I tried to take a photo of him wearing them but he moved around with excitement so much the photos were all blurry! I made up the pattern for these, they are just two tubes with a hole for the thumb. For the claws, I used white wool and the pattern for the claws is ... attach the white then sk 1 st (2 hdc 2 ch 2 hdc) sk 1 st, sl st into next repeat 3 times.

Blue Gloves for a Friend

I made these gloves for a friend, I hope they like them! I just followed the same pattern for my simple gloves that I posted about on Saturday. If anyone wants the pattern, please do just let me know with a comment and I'll write it out and post it here as a free pattern.

Simple Fingerless Gloves

I started making these two winters ago and have only just decided to finish them! I just made up the pattern myself, its simply a tube with a hole for the thumb. If anyone wants the pattern, I will write it out. The blue fingerless gloves I made years ago are not quite warm enough and don't cover enough of my fingers. My fingers get so cold working at the computer or when I'm doing some crochet, I needed something more to cover them!

Toddler's Dark Blue Fingerless Gloves

I quickly made these up today for my 18 month old son to wear during the coldest time of winter, the design is such so they can be easily unravelled to extend when his hands grow bigger.

I really like the idea of being able to add extensions to my hand crafted items so they grow with the child. I chose the dark blue luxury wool from Bendigo for this project because I imagine these might get a little dirty. Also, the fingerless gloves I made for myself, and the gloves I made for my husband, are both dark blue, so baby has a matching pair!
For these toddler sized fingerless gloves I simply made a rectangle 20 dc wide (plus starting chain) and 10 rows deep. This way a side seam can be unravelled, making extensions possible, rather than working in rounds which is what I would normally do. I joined 5 rows at the side with sc, sc along one side only for 2 more rows to leave a gap for the thumb, and joined the last 3 rows with sc, finishing with a slip stitch. The starting chain needs to be at the fingertips because its tighter than the rest of the work. I did not sew in the end with a needle like I usually do, but to make extensions possible, its important to simply weave the end in with the hook. This way the seam can be easily unravelled, so the rectangle can be added to in time for next winter when my son will be a year older. To make the gloves mirror image, one glove has the thumb space sc on the back and the other on the front.
These fingerless gloves could be decorated with monster claws. Maybe someone else would like me to make a pair like that for them so I can show what I mean. Because for my son, I'd rather not dress him up like a monster just yet!

And can you see that cut on his lip? I was horrified last week when Thomas slipped in the shower, I got the fright of my life! My husband called the after hours doctor, and they came about an hour later. The lovely doctor glued up my baby's lip, he didn't make a sound but his eyes welled with tears. Thank goodness its starting to get better already, babies heal so quickly.

David's Fingerless Gloves

I bought another ball of this lima alpaca wool from Lincraft when it was on special to make another pair of fingerless gloves for David, this time I made up my own pattern to fit.

David has been wearing the first pair of fingerless gloves I made, but they are a little small for him, being too short and tight to pull on. It's his birthday today, so I just had to make him another pair in matching wool, this time longer and wider. And just in time for winter to be nearly over, too! At least he'll have them to wear all next winter! This longer pair of fingerless gloves weighs over 60g so took more then 1 x 50g ball of alpaca, and I used a 4mm hook.

My pattern for David's fingerless gloves
1. ch 36, sl st to join and form a circle, taking care not to twist the chain, ch 2, treble (US dc) in 1st ch on the right of ch 2 to form a 'cross-stitch', (sk 1 ch, tr in next ch, tr in sk ch) repeat to end, sl st in top of 1st cross-stitch (18 crosses)
2. sl st into next space, ch 2, treble in top of 1st cross-stitch (sk top of next cross, treble in next space, treble in top of sk cross) repeat to end, sl st in top of 1st cross (18 cross-stitches)
3-13. repeat row 2 until there are 13 rows of cross stitches
14. ch 2, treble in top of cross to the right of ch, ch 10 (thumb hole), sk 2 cross-stitch, sl st in between 2nd and 3rd cross, sl st 2 up the ch, treble in top of 2nd cross, sk top of 3rd cross, treble, treble in top of sk cross, repeat until end, sl st in top of 1st cross (17 cross-stitches)
15. ch 2, treble in top of cross to the right of ch, sl st in thumb hole, 4 dc (US sc) in thumb hole, treble in between next 2 crosses, treble in top of cross to the right to create cross, repeat cross-stitch pattern to end, sl st in top of 1st cross (16 cross-stitches)
16. sl st 1, ch 2, treble in top of cross to the right of ch, sk 1 dc, sl st in next 2 dc, sk 1 dc, treble in between next 2 crosses, treble in top of the 1st of those 2 crosses, sl st in top of 1st cross (16 crosses)
17. sk 1, sl st1, sk 1, sl st 1, sl st 1, ch 2, treble in top of 1st cross left of thumb hole, repeat cross-stitches to end, last one goes in sl st over thumb hole, sl st in top of 1st cross (16 crosses)
18. sl st, ch 2, treble in top of cross (sk 1, treble, treble in sk) repeat to end (16 cross-stitches)
19, 20, 21. repeat row 18

For David's birthday, I also bought him a father-to-be book with a cute lovey-dovey book mark to go with it. He's being such a trooper and so supportive of me right now, I wanted to get him something to help him from a father's point of view. This particular book comes recommended and it made him laugh in the book store when he saw it, so I got it for him. And it's good timing too, Father's Day is a week after his birthday!

Also for David's birthday, we got him an electric mixer! It might not sound like a good present, but it certainly isn't for me as I won't be baking! David loves to bake and is very good at it, so a proper machine will make it even more fun for him! Happy Birthday, my darling David <3 <3 <3

Blue Fingerless Gloves

I really enjoyed working with this lovely lima alpaca blend yarn from Lincraft, it's so soft! This is my post for this week's Blue Monday hosted by Smiling Sally.

Because the Lincraft pattern specified this particular yarn I splurged out and got it, although now I know the pattern I'm sure I could substitute other wool from my stash. The pattern was very easy and is another one in the Crochet 08/09 booklet I bought a couple of months ago.

I'm very pleased with how these worked out, they're perfect for wearing while typing on the computer during the winter months. Have you ever tried typing while wearing normal fingered gloves? LoL, it's just not possible no matter how unfrozen your fingers are!

Be sure to check out other lovely blues @ this week's Blue Monday!

I had a quick look at all the participants this week, something I haven't been able to do before. It does take a long time so I didn't comment on most. A couple I did comment on, and this was my favourite to link, for my future reference.
